A Day of Inspiration: Reflecting on our 2024 National Conference
The Vision Aggregation National Conference held on 20th September in Sydney’s CBD was more than just a gathering of professionals—it was an experience of Knowledge, Growth and Value. Plus, it was our biggest one yet! Set against the backdrop of the city’s vibrant energy, the day felt charged with excitement and potential as mortgage brokers from across the country gathered to “Elevate Their Success.”
National Conference Key Presentations and Panel Discussions
Industry Update and How This Effects the Mortgage Industry
The morning kicked off with a high-impact keynote presentation from Peter White from the FBAA. Peter spoke about critical advocacy efforts and the evolving landscape of the mortgage industry, outlining the challenges brokers face and the initiatives being driven by the FBAA to protect the profession. Peter advocated for:
- Cash-back incentives
- Clawback reform
- Compensation Scheme of Last Resort
- Net of Offset Issues
- Current interest rate environment
Property Markets: Emerging Trends and Opportunities
The 2024 National Conference Property Markets panel provided invaluable insights into emerging trends, forecasting a 1.75% interest rate drop starting in late 2024 or early 2025 through the first quarter of 2026, which will likely boost property prices across most markets. They dispelled concerns of property bubbles, city housing undersupply and strong employment as a stabiliser.
In Sydney and Melbourne, the outlook varies. The rental market will stay tight due to supply constraints, though rental prices may level off as affordability pressures max out. On the construction front, though challenged post-COVID, it is stabilising, with Western Australia remaining a hot spot. For investors, Perth presents strong opportunities, with Melbourne poised for growth by 2026.
Key takeaways for brokers:
- Prepare clients for improving borrowing capacity, driving more demand and higher property prices.
- No imminent property bubbles due to strong employment and ongoing housing shortages can provide confidence in long-term investments.
- Rental affordability reaches its limit, and construction supply becomes smoother. Brokers should help investors understand this impact on investments.
Aritificial Intelligence and the Mortgage Industry
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to disrupt various sectors, Chris Byrne took the stage to present the impact AI has in the mortgage industry. Chris provided an insightful look into how brokers can leverage AI to enhance their businesses, like automating administrative tasks and using AI for data analysis, client communication, and marketing solutions. With AI, brokers can streamline their operations and stay competitive in an increasingly tech-driven market. Brokers can free up more time to focus on relationship building and delivering personalised advice.
Mental Health Matters at Vision
Vision recognises that for mortgage brokers to operate at their peak, they too should focus on their own mental health and wellbeing. Peter White from the FBAA, Jared Dorans from Crown Property Finance and Siobhan Williams from Pepper Money hosted a compelling discussion, delving into the unique pressures brokers face that are out of their control.
Each panellist shared personal experiences and practical strategies into managing stress, maintaining work-life balance, and recognising early signs of burnout. Peter highlighted the importance of industry-wide support systems, Jared emphasised the role of peer networks in mental health resilience, and Siobhan Williams highlighted the research behind healthy eating, lifestyle and mindset.
