Broker Spotlight – Paul Oliver

Paul-Oliver

Paul Oliver, Menzies Financial Services

This month the spotlight is on one of our long time brokers, Paul Oliver. Paul loves helping people buy their homes and improve their long term financial situation, however, there is more to Paul than just being a mortgage broker, please continue on and get to know Paul as we know him…

How did you get into the mortgage broking industry?

Before becoming a broker I had worked on the lender side at AVCO / GE and Bluestone Mortgages. Whilst at Bluestone I got to work with brokers for the first time and I came to understand the mortgage broking industry and the value the service is to consumers.

When I left Bluestone I realized that I never wanted to work for wages again so given my financial services background becoming a mortgage broker was a good choice for me.

What do you like most about the industry?

I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people buy homes and improve their long term financial situation.  It’s a unique role where we can truly act in a clients best interest without outside influences and conflicts. I also love being my own boss and only working the hours that I want to so I can spend time doing the things I enjoy.

Who is your favourite lender and why?

I really do think that all lenders are deficient and treat brokers poorly. Some are less deficient than others. Over a long period ING has been the lender I would recommend the most if a client can qualify with them. They have consistently had good service levels, lower rates and fees and fairly consistent credit decisioning. Macquarie are also becoming a preference with good service levels and tech.

What advice would you offer someone joining the industry?

It takes a while to build up a steady income even with lots of leads etc. But once you have a good trail income you will be happy you made it work.

How and when did you join Vision?

When I joined Menzies they were already with Vision so it was just plug and play.

What do you do in your spare time?

Surf, Write & Play Music, Spend time with the grandkids, fishing, camping and travel.

What challenges are you facing with the current climate?

Horrible lender turnarounds

If you won $10M tomorrow, what would you do?

Never going to happen because I don’t do lotto etc.

Describe what you were like in high school in 3 words

Over It

What is your key for success?

Think Twice, Act Once

What makes you laugh?

My 5 grandkids
